Job Description
As the designer at Kaggle, you will work closely with the data scientists and developers on the Competitions team as well as supporting the creative needs of the energy solutions business. The competition platform is Kaggle’s primary presence on the Internet with an active user base that visits our web page to enter new competitions, interacts with each other on the forums, and learns data science through hands-on experience. As our first full-time product designer, you will have the rare and exciting opportunity to be the lead architect of the Kaggle web experience, as well as guiding our visual identity in marketing and other customer facing materials.
Primary Responsibilities
- Creating new UI/UX concepts (in collaboration with a number of small teams) for the Kaggle website and future Kaggle products
- Communicating and revising these concepts with material such as wireframes and mockups, and scoping delivery of components
- Writing markup in HTML and Razor C#, create the corresponding CSS (LESS) and jQuery, and work with the engineering team to launch new concepts to the site
- Maintaining and evolving the Kaggle visual identity and create material such as documentation, templates, slides, and case studies, using InDesign, Powerpoint, Wordpress and associated software
- Creating additional design or creative works as needed to support other company goals, which will evolve as the company grows and develops new products
A good candidate should have:
- A varied portfolio highlighting excellent skills in typographically-driven design and creating clear, cohesive, eye-catching work in a variety of outputs (web, PDF, slide, print)
- Experience in UX design on a web-based platform — conceptualizing and designing interfaces, information architecture and user flow
- Ability to iteratively and rapidly incorporate and respond to feedback from multiple teams
- Up-to-date knowledge of best practices for web and graphic design
- Favorite tools for producing and sharing mockups and wireframes
- Experience in data-informed design, utilizing techniques such as A/B and user testing, analytics, etc
The best candidates will also have one or more of the following:
- Exposure or knowledge of data science
- Skills in/knowledge of the aesthetics of data visualization (e.g., ggplot or d3.js)
- Experience in motion-driven interface design
- Audiovisual design skills for video collateral (e.g. After Effects)
